Don't Tell Brawley, but Those Smaller Earthquakes Are Good
Los Angeles Times, May 30 – Scientists say that quake swarms are good because they allow pressure to be released through many small quakes that occur frequently, thus averting some of the large quakes that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life. Recent studies by scientists from the University of California, San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography have shown that the Imperial Valley fault is also "creeping," or moving without noticeable earthquakes, about a third of an inch a year. That also helps relieve pressure on the fault.

Alvarado nurses look at rival union
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 30 – Fearful that they were being steered toward a union of management's choosing, nurses at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center yesterday said they are seeking affiliation with a competing union. The California Nurses Association said it is seeking to represent nurses at five hospitals owned by Tenet Healthcare Corp. of Santa Barbara, including Alvarado. CNA represents about 50,000 nurses statewide, including a combined 2,000 at University of California, San Diego Medical Center, the San Diego Blood Bank and the Palomar Pomerado Health District in North County.
