UC boss
unsure of future lab bid
San Francisco Chronicle, May 2 –
University of California President Richard Atkinson told Congress
Thursday he is uncertain whether the university will fight to
keep its 60-year role as steward of the nation's top nuclear
weapons lab, saying the time, costs and criticism may not be
worth the effort. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/05/02/MN307376.DTL
Bush faces
war now at home
San Francisco Chronicle, May 2 –
This morning, President Bush returns to the mainland to promote
his tax-cut plan in Silicon Valley. For all the White House's
efforts to drape Bush in patriotic and military symbols at every
appearance, there is little evidence that his wartime popularity
is paying domestic dividends. "There is nothing in the
polling data to suggest that the improvement in Bush's foreign
policy ratings translates into greater support for domestic
policy proposals," said University of California,
San Diego political science Professor Gary
Jacobson.

Chinese
government pressured for results
USA Today, May 2 – After acknowledging
that the Chinese government initially misled people about the
severity of the disease, Chinese President Hu Jintao's team
is under pressure to show immediate results in the fight that
captivates this capital. If the leadership does not, the consequences
could threaten the month-old Hu administration and, some say,
Communist rule itself. (Quotes Susan Shirk,
a China specialist at the University of California,
San Diego).

Protesters
gather at colleges and harbor
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 2 –
As President Bush addressed the nation last night from the aircraft
carrier Abraham Lincoln, about 200 protesters demonstrated at
the San Diego Harbor to denounce Bush and call for U.S. troops
to leave Iraq. Students from San Diego State University, University
of California, San Diego, University of San Diego and
City College condemned the war, emphasizing activism and calling
for U.S. troops to return. At UCSD, about 25
students listened to poets talk about a need for social change.
