Asian Dust Plume Might Sway U.S. Climate, Say Scientists

, May 16 -- Jeff Stith of the National Center for Atmospheric Research communicated with reporters via Web chat from a research jet flying 40,000 feet above the ocean as part of a mission to track dust and pollution particles blown from Asia to the United States. Stith and his ground-based colleague, V. Ramanathan of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, aimed to study the interaction between the pollution and dust with high-altitude clouds bearing ice crystals. More

New UCSD Medical Tower Gets Board Approval

, May 16 -- A committee of the University of California Board of Regents Tuesday recommended approval of the construction of a tower at UCSD's East Campus medical complex to house 125 to 150 inpatient beds. The full Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on the Building and Ground Committee's recommendation on Thursday, according to UCSD. Final approval for the project is expected in the next 12 to 18 months. More

Susan Shirk Discusses China's Looming Presence

, May 15 -- Susan Shirk first went to China in 1971 when she was a student and actually shook hands with Chinese Premier at the time, Zou Enlai. Shirk subsequently became Deputy Assistant Secretary of State responsible for U.S. relations with China from 1997-2000. She is currently director of UCSD's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and a professor at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. She recently published a new book, “China – Fragile Superpower.”  More

Geisel Continues Support of UCSD Library System
