Stanley Miller, Who Examined Origins of Life, Dies at 77
The New York Times, May 23 --Stanley L. Miller, a scientist whose spectacular discovery as a young graduate student pioneered the study of the origin of life on earth, died Sunday at a hospital near his home in National City, Calif. He was 77. He spent much of his scientific career at UCSD. More

UCSD Wins Grant to Launch Massive Study of the Oceans
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 23 -- UCSD has won a $29 million contract to help launch a high-tech project aimed at revolutionizing people's knowledge of the oceans. The university's efforts are part of a $350 million federal initiative that coordinators describe as the greatest leap in marine science since research vessels began exploring the seas in the 1870s.’ More

Preuss School Ranked 9th Among U.S. High Schools
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 23 -- The Preuss School, a charter campus at UCSD, has been ranked among the nation's top 10 high schools by Newsweek magazine. Preuss, which serves students in sixth through 12th grade, was ranked ninth among 1,200 public schools. It was the only California school to crack the top 10. More

Taubman Puts $5M Into ALS Research
Detroit News, May 23 -- Research into the causes and treatment of Lou Gehrig's disease is getting a boost from retail mogul and philanthropist A. Alfred Taubman, who is donating $5 million to the University of Michigan. The gift will support research led by U-M neurologist and scientist Dr. Eva Feldman, whose team will work with researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine on several scientific fronts to try to stop or slow the disease. Birth Control Pill That Halts Periods Approved
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 23 -- The Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved the first birth control pill that eliminates a woman's monthly period. Taken daily, the contraceptive, called Lybrel, continuously administers slightly lower doses of the same hormones in many standard birth control pills to suppress menstruation.
