Warming? It's Already Burning
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Opinion, May 20 --A study, which focused on the western United States, found since 1986 a fourfold increase in major wildfires and a sixfold increase in the area of forest burned, compared to the period from 1970 to 1986. A similar increase in wildfires has been reported in Canada from 1920 to 1999, the study noted. "The increase in large wildfires appears to be another part of a chain of reactions to climate warming," said Dan Cayan, director of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Climate Research Division and a study co-author.
