Interest Groups
Finally get Fight they Expected

USA Today, Nov. 1—After two false starts, the battle over the Supreme Court's future that conservative and liberal interest groups raised millions of dollars to fight has begun. (Quote by Gary Jacobson, a political science professor at UCSD.) More

Wireless Base Stations
CNN Magazine, Nov. 11—Wireless base stations are only as good as the amplifiers that extend their range to provide coverage for cell-phone users. Yet efficiency is typically only 10 percent for high-power amplifiers used in the base stations of third-generation wireless systems, which means they require ten times more power than they generate. Now engineers at UCSD and industry collaborators have achieved greater than 50 percent efficiency -- a record which could foretell more powerful base stations. More

Why this Unpopular
War Has No Tipping Point

Christian Science Monitor, Nov. 1—Media attention focused on the death of the 2,000th American soldier in Iraq last week. Public Discourse On Our Coffee Cups
San Diego Union-Tribune, Richard Louv, Nov. 1—On Monday during a morning walk, a friend of mine exclaimed, "He's no Rosa Parks!" Before we get to who he is, let's just say that Rosa Parks was no Rosa Parks either – at least not the way her story is usually told. (Refers to UCSD.) More

Inner Piece
San Diego Union-Tribune, Nov. 1—Taking care of your body's bones is a little like maintaining a vehicle. While it's imperative to keep the engine tuned and running smoothly, if the fenders are rusted out and the chassis is shot, you might as well just park it. Without a sturdy frame – your body's or your car's – you're probably not going anywhere very far or very fast. (Quote by Samme Fuchs, registered dietitian and director of clinical nutrition at UCSD Medical Center.) More

'06 Outlook for
Growth of Economy Mirrors '05
San Diego Union-Tribune
, Nov. 1—The economic outlook for 2006 looks a lot like it has been in 2005 – slow, steady growth – but that picture could darken if interest rates rise too high or the housing market tumbles, a panel of economists told a conference of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce yesterday. (Quote by Ross Starr, an economist at UCSD.)
