New Ocean
Science Effort Proposed
MSNBC, Nov. 4-Undiscovered foods,
useful chemicals and drugs, and potential sources of energy
may lie in wait in the least-explored portion of Earth - the
oceans. A new effort to seek out those resources was recommended
Tuesday in a report by the National Research Council, an arm
of the National Academy of Sciences. John Orcutt,
deputy director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
and chairman of the committee that prepared the report, said
vast portions of the oceans have not been examined for geochemical
and biological resources.

How Business
Influences Education in San Diego
San Diego Metropolitan, Sept 2003-James
M. Langley is UCSD's vice chancellor
for external relations, where he is about halfway through a
$1 billion fund-raising campaign. Even at his tech-centric campus,
he says, "The strongest support we receive for the humanities
is from our alumni who are maybe 10 years into their science
or engineering careers. They come back and say, 'The most valuable
classes I took here were outside my major.'"

Comparing
Cancer Centers
San Diego Metropolitan, Nov. 2003-The
Scripps Cancer Center and Rebecca and John Moores UCSD
Cancer Center have the same mission - treating and curing cancer
- but there are similarities and differences in how they tackle
the effort. UCSD is designated a Comprehensive
Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, the only one
in San Diego and one of just 41 in the United States. It attained
this honor in August 2001 by meeting rigorous standards for
cancer research, prevention, control and education.

Sempra Sees
40.6% Gain in Net Income
San Diego Union-Tribune, Nov. 7-Sempra
Energy showed yesterday just how erratic the energy business
can be when it posted third-quarter financial results beyond
expectations thanks to incentive awards and a legal settlement
with California regulators. But Sempra's third-quarter results
report might be misleading to investors because it includes
many unusual items of high magnitude that added and subtracted
from the earnings stream. (Quote by Michael Willoughby,
a professor of economics at the University of California,
San Diego.)

Did Brush
Fires Cause Species' Extinction?
NBCSandiego.com, Nov. 6-The wildfires
that ravaged San Diego County were also deadly to some of its
smallest inhabitants -- fragile, endangered butterflies that
live in the coastal regions and mountains and virtually nowhere
else. (Quote by Dan Marschalek, a University
of California, San Diego graduate student.)

Get This Party Started

an alliance this summer that could forever alter their country's
political landscape. (Quote by Ellis Krauss,
