History's
Tea Leaves Point to Bush's Reelection
Washington Post, Nov. 18-The day-to-day
news about violence in Iraq and lingering economic worries at
home obscure a fundamental reality about next year's election:
Historically speaking, it should belong to President Bush. Since
the presidential primary system became influential in 1952,
an incumbent president has never lost a reelection bid if he
did not face significant opposition in the primaries. (Quote
by Gary Jacobson, a political scientist at
the University of California at San Diego.)

SIO Collections: Legacy
or Lost Forever
La Jolla
Village News, Sept. 18-Scripps Institution
of Oceanography boasts the equivalent of an exhaustive
photo collection in the form of its Oceanographic Collections.
They are the largest and most complete of any university in
the world and are a worldwide resource for scientists, students
and the public. But now, because of California's large financial
deficit, budgets for state-funded science programs like the
Collections have been decimated, leaving the Collections without
funding by fall of 2004.

Riding
the Trolley
San Diego Union-Tribune, Editorial,
Nov. 18-The San Diego Trolley extension that will take light
rail into the heart of the UCSD campus and
on into the Golden Triangle and University City is extremely
important. Not only will it tie the campus to its namesake residential
and commercial community but also bring UCSD
and the rest of the city much closer together.
