UC Fee Hikes OKd, Again

UCSD's Holmes Appointed to Commission
San Diego Daily Transcript, Nov. 19-A third San Diegan has been named to a statewide commission that will oversee a $6 billion stem cell research initiative passed by California voters on Nov. 2. Dr. Edward Holmes, vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of UCSD's School of Medicine was appointed by UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox to serve on the Independent Citizens Oversight Commission for Prop. 71.

Amgen Opens $100M Venture Fund in San Diego
North County Times, Nov. 18-Looking to profit from the large local biotechnology industry, biotech giant Amgen Inc. has opened a $100 million venture capital fund in San Diego. Duane Roth, then chairman of Biocom and now director of UCSD Connect, said Thursday that he and other Biocom officials met with Amgen executives several months ago to convince the company that it would profit from setting up a venture capital fund in San Diego.
