UN: Brown Clouds Over Asia Worsen Global Warming

, Nov. 13 -- A thick brown cloud of soot, particles and chemicals stretching from the Persian Gulf to Asia threatens health and food supplies in the world, the U.N. reported Thursday, citing what it called the newest threat from global warming. The enormous cloud masses can move across continents within three to four days, said lead scientist, Veerabhadran Ramanathan, with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. More

Eating Red Meat Shown to Increase Cancer Risk

, Nov. 14 -- New York, Nov. 14 -- Human consumption of red meat and milk products can contribute to the increased risk of cancerous tumors, according to a National Cancer Institute-backed study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A husband-and-wife team of physician-scientists at the UCSD School of Medicine, has newly demonstrated a mechanism for how this increase in risk occurs. More

, Nov. 14 -- About 400,000 San Diego County residents joined in the Great Southern California ShakeOut, a simulation of a 7.8 earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault that was billed as the largest quake drill in U.S. history.
