Task Force Opposes Routine
Mammograms for Women Age 40-49
CNN, Nov. 16 -- Women in their 40s should not get routine mammograms for early detection of breast cancer, according to updated guidelines set forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Before having a mammogram, women ages 40 to 49 should talk to their doctors about the risks and benefits of the test, and then decide if they want to be screened, according to the task force. Checking the Right
Boxes, but Failing the Patient
The New York Times, Nov. 16 -- The voice on the phone was authoritative, even brusque. A father was calling our after-hours line to ask about his teenage daughter. “She’s got another headache,” he said, as I recall. “I’m going to the pharmacy, just wanted your advice on what strength of Tylenol to get her.” Those opening lines did not admit much room for questions. I knew neither him nor his daughter, but there seemed to be little margin for error in my response. I could almost hear his foot tapping, waiting for the answer. Past, Present and
Future of the Parking Garage
The New York Times, Nov. 16 -- Yes, there’s a parking meter — and parking time stamp machines and parking attendant hats. Just about everything you can imagine about the subject of parking is to be found in an exhibition at the National Building Museum in Washington. “House of Cars: Innovation and the Parking Garage,” which opened last month, looks at the history and future of the parking structure. The show includes images of garages by Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei and Santiago Calatrava. (Mentions design for UCSD’s Revelle College by the architect Harry Wolf) More

Best Venue for Music Appreciation
San Diego CityBeat, Nov. 11 -- The Loft @ UCSD’s not for everyone: They book bands than tend toward quiet and smart. And, it’s one of the few music venues in San Diego where it’s possible to sit down and enjoy a show. Yes, sit down—because, at some point, standing among a crowd, on your toes to see around the chatty couple in front of you, ceases to be enjoyable. The Loft’s design, by Bells and Whistles, is minimal and modernist, tending toward Japanese austere, and, a few weeks ago, the venue knocked out a back wall and added a small dining area where food and drinks are provided by local bistro Zanzibar—like turkey sliders, cheese plates and a hummus / pita / olive combo. UCSD Medical Student
Gets into 'Apps' Business
San Diego Daily Transcript, Nov. 17 -- Being a full-time, third-year medical student UCSD is tough enough, but Michael Fujinaka is also busy helping his fellow students learn. He answered his own questions about identifying heart murmurs by inventing a practical, high-tech learning tool. More
