, Nov. 24 -- Evolutionary steps from egg-laying to live birth may be present in a species of fruit fly that often lays larvae instead of eggs, UCSD reports today. The fruit flies, from the Seychelles Islands, lay eggs that are very advanced in development, in some cases hatching while they are being laid, said research leader Therese Markow. Even eggs that were laid unhatched much more quickly, within two hours, as compared to an average of 23 hours for 10 other fruit fly species studied. More
