Youth Drinking Affects Brain Size
About.com, Oct. 5-Previous research has shown that alcohol-use disorders are associated with abnormalities of the prefrontal cortex, thalamus and the cerebellar hemispheres in adults. These same brain structures are known to be actively maturing during adolescence. An examination of adolescents and young adults with alcohol-use disorders has found that a smaller prefrontal cortex is associated with early-onset drinking. (Refers to research by UCSD.) More
Federal Money to be Used to Study Microbes
Boston Globe, Oct. 5-A University of Massachusetts microbiologist was awarded nearly $22 million in federal money for research that could lead to new methods for harvesting energy and cleaning polluted sites. Lovley's team will collaborate with other universities including UCSD. More

Chairwoman Patricia Rincon Resigns
North County Times, Oct. 5-Commission for the Arts Chairwoman Patricia Rincon announced her resignation Monday, citing other professional obligations. Rincon, who did not speak from the dais at Monday's meeting, told commissioners the demands of her job as a UCSD dance instructor and as a director of her own dance company were driving her decision.
