Group Calls Climate at UCSD Unfriendly
to Chicano, Latino Students and Faculty
San Diego Union-Tribune, Oct. 16-
The UCSD Chicano/Latino Concilio charged in
a recent critique subtitled "A Legacy of Institutional
Neglect" that UC San Diego's atmosphere
is unwelcoming to Chicano and Latino students and faculty. The
group credits the university and Robert Dynes,
UCSD's former chancellor and UC's new systemwide
president, with successes, including admissions policy changes
that weigh academic and personal accomplishments, contracts
to boost community college transfer student numbers, and the
creation of the Chicano and Latino arts and humanities program
and minor. UCSD administrators on Monday acknowledged
the concerns raised in the report and said the recommendations
would be carefully considered.

Mars Somalia Peace Talks
Toronto Star, Oct. 16-The peace conference
in Kenya neither reconciles Somali factions nor does it re-establish
a Somali state. Rather, it surrenders Somalia's national interests
to those of its hostile neighbors. (Quote by Barbara
