Joan, Irwin Jacobs Give $500K to UCSD Center

, Oct. 1 – UCSD's Center on Pacific Economies has received a $500,000 gift from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, bringing its total grants from the philanthropists to $2 million. Founded in 2006, the center researches the economies of Pacific Rim countries, looks for ways to encourage their development and encourages cooperation on common issues. The center is based at the university's School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. More

, Oct. 1 -- Raj Krishnan, a UCSD Ph.D. student in bioengineering, was determined to turn his thesis research on cancer diagnostics into a thriving business. This dream led him to a unique resource on campus, the UCSD Entrepreneur Challenge. Through their events, he was able to put together a team of students from diverse disciplines and learn from successful entrepreneurs what was needed to commercialize his research. His team, Biological Dynamics, won first place and $25,000 in cash and $15,000 in legal services in last year’s business plan presentation competition. Since then, they have incorporated and are pursuing other funding sources. More
