Glowing Jellyfish Earns Nobel Prize
CNN, Oct. 8 -- Research into the mysterious green glow of a jellyfish earned three scientists this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry, the Nobel Foundation announced Wednesday. Osamu Shimomura of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts; Martin Chalfie of Columbia University; and Roger Tsien of UCSD won for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein GFP. Are Three Guesses Better Than One?
Scientific American, October 2008 -- Psychologists Edward Vul of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harold Pashler of UCSD, asked 428 participants various trivia questions and then, without warning, asked them to guess again later. On average, a person’s combined responses were more accurate than either of his or her guesses alone, the authors reported in Psychological Science in July. More
Civil Trial Under Way in Suit Over Advertising
Forbes, Oct. 9 -- n expert on smoking and health said Wednesday that R.J. Reynolds relied on suspect data to support its claim that smokers of its Eclipse cigarettes may face less risk than smokers of conventional ones. Testifying in a civil suit, Dr. David Burns, a pulmonologist and professor emeritus at the UCSD’s medical school, said too few people participated in studies of the cigarette and that they didn't use it long enough for scientists to draw meaningful conclusions about whether it's safer than other brands.
