Sanders Says San Diego Will Seek
Federal Waiver on Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

, San Diego, Oct. 11 -- San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says he wants another waiver from the federal government to avoid a $1.5 billion upgrade to a water treatment plant. The mayor's decision follows a city panel's finding that water treated at the Point Loma plant does not harm the environment. The committee was appointed by Sanders in June and was comprised of seven scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD and San Diego State University. More

Port Awards Grants for Environmental Endeavors

, Oct. 10 – UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography will study copper levels in sediment and water from copper-based paint in recreational boats that frequent San Diego Bay. The Audubon Society will improve the nesting habitat for the endangered western snowy plover, and the Urban Corps of San Diego County will clean up parts of Chollas Creek and restore them with native plants. More
