Ready for Another Gas Tied to Warming?

, Oct. 23 -- A potent greenhouse gas is at least four times more prevalent in the atmosphere than was previously estimated, a new study reports. Using new analytical techniques, a research team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography made the first atmospheric measurements of nitrogen trifluoride, which is thousands of times more effective at warming the atmosphere than an equal amount of carbon dioxide (though carbon dioxide is much more prevalent, and therefore still the key greenhouse gas of concern in terms of global warming). More

Obituary: George Palade

, U.K., Oct. 23 -- George Palade, who died on October 10 aged 95, won the 1974 Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine (with Albert Claude and Christian de Duve) for his work in establishing the structure and functions of important components of living cells; he was the only Romanian-born scientist to have won a Nobel. Palade left Yale in 1990 to become the first dean for scientific affairs at UCSD. He retired in 2001 at the age of 88 but remained a consultant. More
