Swine Flu: Heavy at Some Hospitals, Mild at Others
ABC News
, Oct. 28 -- While most every hospital in the United States has made some provisions for a possible swine flu crisis, not all seem to be experiencing the surge of patients for which their emergency departments and intensive care units have prepared. While most every hospital in the United States has made some provisions for a possible swine flu crisis, not all seem to be experiencing the surge of patients for which their emergency departments and intensive care units have prepared. Vanishing Pointe: Where are All the Great Female Choreographers?
Guardian (U.K.)
, Oct. 27 -- Dance has always been seen as the one art form where women weren't just more visible than men, but were also in charge. From the pioneering contemporary choreographer Martha Graham, to the Royal Ballet founder Ninette de Valois, to the late, great Pina Bausch, the list of female names who have been pivotal to the profession is as impressive as it is long. Yet last week, Britain's leading dance festival, Dance Umbrella, joined forces with the pressure group Dance UK to host a sell-out debate that was titled, starkly, Where Are All the Women? The Case Against a High Household Base Fee
Voice of San Diego
, Oct. 28 -- Several readers have raised issues both pro and con concerning San Diego’s base water fee for households. It is good to get a few facts on the table. San Diego’s water rates table shows a base fee of $35.18 bi-monthly or $17.59 per month. For a household using roughly 150 gallons of water a day, which is substantially more than many two-person households living in an apartment or condo would use, their water bill in San Diego would be $17.87 for the water used plus $17.59 for the base fee which is $35.46. Thus roughly half of the water bill is for the fixed base fee. For a single person living alone, the base fee can easily be 75 percent of the water bill. Creative Time Revolutionizes the Sleepy Conference
Artinfo
, Oct. 13 -- “In this country, when you’re critical of the government from the right, you get a mainstream TV show,” artist and activist Dara Greenwald declared on Saturday at “Revolutions in Public Practice,” the first ever summit organized by New York arts nonprofit Creative Time. She didn’t finish the thought, but the multigenerational crowd of academics, activists, and artists that had gathered at the New York Public Library to hear many of their most distinguished colleagues speak could probably fill in the rest.  (Mentions UCSD visual arts professor Teddy Cruz who attended the summit and participated in the panel on “Crisscrossing Geo-Political Boundaries”) More
