America
and the Future of Iraq
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion,
Sept. 9-It is presidential campaign season and the biggest issue
concerning Americans and the world remains undiscussed. The
occupation of Iraq has been, in the words of the president,
a "catastrophic success." It is catastrophic in its
cost in Iraqi and American lives, money, and American international
prestige and credibility. Where do we go from here? What does
the future hold for the United States and Iraq? Who will decide?

professor of modern Middle East history at the University

Pollution
Harms Children's Lungs, Says USC Study
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 9-Children
who breathe heavily polluted air have stunted lung development
compared with those exposed to cleaner air, a finding with worrisome
implications for later lung and heart disease, according to
a study released today. "We now have the evidence: Pollution
is harming children's lungs," said W. James Gauderman,
associate professor at the University of Southern California
Keck School of Medicine and the report's lead author. (Quote
by Douglas Conrad M.D., a lung expert at UCSD
Medical Center.)

Undergraduates,
Overachiever UCSD Students Vet Research in Scientific Journal
San Diego Daily Transcript, Sept.
8-It's a peer-review scientific journal with a following of
several thousand researchers. Articles run the gamut, from neuroligin-induced
vesicle clustering to ciliary ganglia neurons. While the end
result can be likened to Cell or Nature, the process of compiling
the newly minted Saltman Quarterly is a product of its unique
environment. The Saltman Quarterly is produced by undergraduate
students in the Division of Biological Sciences at University
of California, San Diego. While other UCSD
departments -- and even other reputable universities such as
Harvard, Berkeley and Stanford -- have undergraduate scientific
journals, this is a first for UCSD's biology
department.
