More of the Sexes
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 10-
As scientific and medical knowledge has progressed, the definition
of what it means to be male or female has become increasingly
complex and less settled. Some question whether physical attributes
can adequately define one's sex, especially when those attributes
are contradictory, as with hermaphrodites or intersex babies.
(Quote by Dr. Madhu Alagiri, a pediatric urologist
and assistant professor of surgery at UCSD.)

MEChA
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion,
Sept. 10- It would be tempting to dismiss the recent media flap
around the candidacy of Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and his membership
in the student organization Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de
Aztlan, or MEChA, as much to do about nothing. But for those
of us who have been following over the last decade the political
propaganda of anti-Mexican hate groups, the controversy indicates
just how far the rhetoric and tactics of the extreme right have
entered the mainstream media. (Article written by Jorge
Mariscal, a professor of literature at UCSD.)
