Being Made to Treat Bipolar Disorder
KPBS News, Sept. 10-Manic depression
affects 1% of the adult population, causing extreme and often
debilitating mood swings. While scientists aren't sure what
causes bipolar disorder, a team of researchers at UC
San Diego lead by psychiatrist John Kelsoe,
has identified a specific gene that appears to be linked to
the illness called GRK3.

might soon be able to diagnose a rare genetic disorder called
Joubert syndrome before a baby is born. Researchers from the
University of California, San Diego, have identified
chromosome 11 as a second site for a gene or genes that cause
the syndrome.

Set to Change the World
Cavalier Daily, Sept. 11-Nanotechnology,
the science of manipulating materials and creating tools on
the atomic scale, is on the rise almost 64 years after Richard
Feynman's prophetic paper on nanotechnology was published. A
team of scientists at the University of California,
San Diego used nanotechnology recently when they developed
"smart dust," microscopic grains of sand which can
orient themselves in ways that can reveal information. (Quote
