Young Candidates
Seek Respect
San Jose Mercury News, Sept. 15-The
twentysomethings running for governor want to be taken seriously,
arguing that they bring a perspective to politics that's often
not included in public policy discussions. Although most of
the young candidates don't expect to win, they say they're using
the campaign as a forum to air their views and to engage young
voters. (Quote by candidate Daniel Watts, a

San Diego "5 a Day" campaign, visits schools and youth
groups to give presentations about nutrition in the hopes of

Principal
Principles
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 14-The
Ten Commandments are very much a part of our society. Besides
helping to shape our secular laws and our cultural codes of
ethics, they remain a kind of invisible measuring stick for
our behavior today. With a little editorial license, along with
some help from David Noel Freedman, a venerable
UCSD professor who is one of the nation's foremost
experts on these Judeo-Christian commandments, here is a look
at the ancient mandates through a 21st century lens.

are finding that many of the underlying circuits in bird brains
that drive song have corresponding pathways in the human brain
that drive speech and language. For Peter Marler, the father
of bird song science, birds are exquisite models for understanding
learning, memory and speech in humans. (Quote by Harvey
