UC San Diego Enrollment Hits Record High
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 12- A record 23,500 students enrolled at UC San Diego this fall, the school announced today. Enrollment for the fall quarter, which begins Sept. 22, reflects a 6 percent increase over last year. (Quote by Pat JaCoby, director of University Outreach at UCSD.)

Blue Skies & Biotech: How a New Economy was Born in San Diego
Seattle Times, Sept. 15- Relying on advice from a how-to book, Ted Greene and Howard Birndorf, two scientists from the University of California at San Diego, started a company in the late 1970s called Hybritech - and ignited a local biotech boom. Although their company no longer exists, it transformed the commerce of the San Diego region, which now ranks as the nation's third-largest biotech center.

Cream Rising to Top as Injury Treatment
Copley News Service, Sept. 15- Transdermal anti-inflammatories in topical creams, directly delivered to the site of a sports injury or overused muscle, may represent the next generation of pain relief. A manufacturer-sponsored trial undertaken at the University of California, San Diego, and published in the July issue of the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, supports both the efficacy and safety of one such cream: ketoprofen.

San Jose Mercury News, Sept. 15-The twentysomethings running for governor want to be taken seriously, arguing that they bring a perspective to politics that's often not included in public policy discussions. Food Fight
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 13-For some kids, school is the only place they get a healthy meal, one that meets government nutrition standards. Katie Bogue, a registered dietitian with the UCSD Division of Community Pediatrics and program assistant for the San Diego "5 a Day" campaign, visits schools and youth groups to give presentations about nutrition in the hopes of getting kids past the "ick" factor when it comes to fruits and vegetables.
