2003, the independent and bipartisan Pew Commission released
the results of its 3-year nationwide study of the condition
of the oceans. Paul Dayton, a researcher at
the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is
lead author of the report titled "Ecological Effects Of
Fishing In Marine Ecosystems Of The United States," which
is the first detailed look at the vast marine resources in 30
years.

Keeps up Social Commentary
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sept. 18-
The annual Jill Watson Festival Across the Arts at Carnegie
Mellon University, which will be held tomorrow and Thursday,
has become a significant local contemporary arts event, sponsoring
edgy performance and stimulating lectures by internationally
exhibited artists who work in cross-disciplinary collaboration.
At the event, a lecture will be given by UCSD
emeritus professor of visual arts, Eleanor Antin.

Blood Bank
Seeks Donors
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 16-
The San Diego Blood Bank, which also collects and distributes
blood to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest and
Thornton Hospital, needs more donors this week because a refrigerator
in Irvine overcooled last Friday, requiring 3,533 units to be
quarantined for testing.

Students' Campus Condom Giveaway Touts Israel as a Safe Place
for Women, Gays
The Jerusalem Post, Sept. 15-Distributing
condoms whose packaging bears the slogan "Israel: It's
Still Safe to Come," Hillel students at the University
of California, San Diego, are doing their part to counter
the bad rap given the country by pointing out that Israel is
the only country in the Middle East which affords equal rights
to women and homosexuals.
