Will Climate
Change Spark Fiercer Storms?
MSNBC News, Sept. 15-As Hurricane
Ivan and its powerful winds churned through the Gulf of Mexico,

South County Turns University Dream Into
Innovative Plan
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 16-South
County's dream of a four-year university of its own has been
revived. A small working committee of Chula Vista city officials,
aided by an educational consulting firm, has come up with an
innovative model for a mix of public and private colleges on
1,500 acres long designated for a South Bay campus. (Quote by
Marye Anne Fox, chancellor at UC San
Diego.)

Local Schools
Post Top Marks in State Tests
La Jolla Light, Sept. 9-Teachers and
administrators at La Jolla public schools have good reason to
pat themselves on the back, thanks to the release of the state's
annual Adequate Yearly Progress tests. The Preuss Model School
at UCSD was number one in the district, with
a score of 845. This small, select institution is particularly
notable for its high scores as it is the only school in La Jolla
to bus in its students from under-privileged areas of San Diego.
