Century
of Sea Change
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 24-
The first 100 years of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
marked an early age of exploration, when scientists probed the
sea floor, mapped deep currents and discovered strange life
forms in the murky depths. Now,
as Scripps - one of the world's most important
research centers - enters its second century this week, it is
evolving and undertaking vast new missions. (Quote by Charles
Kennel, director of the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography.)

This Centennial
Begins with Sea
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 24-
Unlike life itself, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
did not emerge from the sea, but merged beside it, erected through
the vision and efforts of some of the world's greatest scientists.
As tomorrow marks the centennial of SIO, we'll
take a look back at some of SIO's biggest milestones.

Computer
Scientist Tackling DNA
Associated Press, Sept. 23-A team
of researchers at the University of New Mexico headed by Bernard
Moret will spearhead a five-year, multimillion-dollar effort
announced last week to compare organisms' DNA, the genetic blueprint
for each unique organism. The tree of life Moret envisions would
map out the relationships among living things as they evolved.
The project, announced by the National Science Foundation, also
will involve the University of California, San Diego.

Say It With
Flowers
LA Weekly, Sept. 18-UCSD
professor Kim MacConnel, a pioneer in the art
form Pattern Decoration, is having his work featured at the
Santa Monica Museum retrospective, "Parrot Talk."
The show, which opens Saturday, is the hub of a piecemeal survey
of P&D history and traditions drolly titled "The LAPD
Project," taking place at six separate venues in Bergamot
Station and orchestrated by critic and increasingly busy curator
Michael Duncan.

1,000 Faces
San
Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 24-If there is an American
painter who is ripe for a retrospective, Manny Farber,
a professor emeritus at UCSD, is the one. "About
Face: Manny Farber" is now at the Museum of Contemporary
Art San Diego, which organized this important exhibition and
is presenting it in La Jolla.
