UCSD Joins Center to ID Genes with Illness Links

San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 26-The University of California, San Diego and the Center for the Advancement of Genomics announced yesterday that they will be formally collaborating to use large-scale genome analysis to predict the occurrence and outcome of disease, with an initial focus on hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The Center for the Advancement of Genomics, also known as TCAG, was created by J. Craig Venter, a UCSD graduate. SD Pharmaceutical Building
City News Service, Sept. 25-Officials at UC San Diego broke ground today for a 104,000-square-foot facility to house a new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The $42 million, four-story building will house classrooms and an auditorium as well as a clinical pharmacy practice and laboratories. City News Service, Sept. 25- A UC San Diego associate professor of engineering was named to MIT Technology Review's list of the world's 100 top innovators under 35. Sangeeta Bhatia was recognized for her groundbreaking research in nonotechnology, medicine and tissue engineering.

Researchers Say Whaling Altered the Food Chain
MSNBC, Sept. 25-A recent study sets forth a radical and potentially important new idea: An ecological chain reaction dating to industrial-scale hunting of whales in the North Pacific a half-century ago has driven the widespread decline of Alaskan seals, sea lions and otters that have puzzled scientists for decades. Chancellor Plans Return to Teaching
Oakland Tribune, Sept. 26- University of California, Berkeley, Chancellor Robert Berdahl -- whose tenure has been marked by academic achievement, protests and new research initiatives -- said Thursday he intends to step down from his post next June. Berkeley won't be the only UC campus searching for a new chancellor. UC San Diego is conducting a nationwide search for a new chief because its current chancellor, Robert Dynes, has been named the new president of the 10-campus UC system.

Schwarzenegger Flip but Exceeds Expectations in Recall Debate
