A Hard Test in College Finances
Los Angeles Times, Sept. 8 -- I boarded JetBlue's flight to Los Angeles with a bag full of mixed feelings. My daughter, Samantha, and I were returning from Boston after a week of college tours. Seven colleges in five cities in seven days, it made a whirlwind European trip seem lazy. (Mentions UCSD). More

Under the Sea
The Boston Globe, Sept. 10 -- From global warming to energy security, some of the biggest challenges facing our species involve processes taking place in the oceans. So it might come as a surprise that even oceanographers say we know virtually nothing about the giant saltwater ecosystem that covers so much of the earth. (Mentions Scripps Institute of Oceanography). More

Satellites Feed Weather Information to Create Flash-flood Warning System
The San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 8 -- Hurricane Felix's march through Central America this week could help a local nonprofit corporation perfect a flash-flood warning system that may eventually span the globe. The system, created by Konstantine Georgakakos, a hydrologist and Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor. More

An Employment Recession May Already Be With Us
Bloomberg.com, Sept. 10 -- We learned Friday that the U.S. economy shed 4,000 jobs in August, the first decline in payrolls since 2003. The bad news spread retroactively to previous months, as the numbers for June and July were revised down. (Mentions UCSD economist James Hamilton). More

Nursing Jobs are Hot, but There's a Catch
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 9 – Hope this isn't taken the wrong way – especially by my wife – but nurses in San Diego County are hot. I mean, they're the hottest.According to the employment department, registered nurses are the “hottest” profession in the county (their word, not mine), meaning they have the best combination of relatively high pay and good prospects for job growth. (Quotes Jeri Jenkins, a UCSD nurse). More

A Peek Into How the Mayor's Office Runs
Voice of San Diego, Sept. 9 -- When the dispute over the height of the Sunroad Enterprises office building worked its way up City Hall's chain of command in December, Mayor Jerry Sanders was receiving competing advice from within his camp. On one side, a key political advisor recommended taking a hard-line against the developer, sensing the city could better control the public repercussions over mistakes the mayor's bureaucracy made in handling the project. (Quotes David Schkade, a professor at the UCSD’s Rady School of Management). More

Many Small-Business Owners Go Back to School
North County Times, Sept. 11 -- As the fall semester begins at colleges and universities across the country, thousands of small-business owners will be among the students. Many people who run their own companies realize they need to learn more about finance, marketing and managing, and so they decide to squeeze courses into their already tight schedules. Brenda Sullivan, owner of BLS Communications, a San Diego-based public relations business, is in the midst of obtaining a certificate in digital design. It will take 1 1/2 years to complete the certificate at the UCSD, but already, Sullivan said, "when I work with graphic designers, I feel so much more confident." More

Cell Phones, Internet Join Fight against Teen Obesity
North County Times, Opinion, Sept. 9 -- Last year, Angela Robinson of San Marcos made an important decision for her then-15-year-old daughter Brianna Rodriquez. The mother of two enrolled her oldest in a study being conducted by the UCSD School of Medicine, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. The study uses the Internet and cell phones to help teens make changes in diet and behavior. The participants, ages 12 to 16, must have at least two risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes. Brianna fit those criteria. More
