Huge Tuition Increases
San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 11 -- The price of a public education at the University of California may be going up again - not once, but twice. UC President Mark Yudof is recommending a 15 percent increase in in-state undergraduate fees that would take effect next spring, and another 15 percent increase on top of that beginning in fall 2010. Fish Farm in the Works
Del Mar Times, Sept. 10 -- San Diego-based Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute has plans to make a big splash in the ocean just a few miles off La Jolla. The institute currently is pursuing government permits to build the largest offshore commercial fish farm in U.S. federal waters. S.D. Superintendent Accepts Job in Houston
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 11 -- The Houston school board hired Superintendent Terry Grier away from the San Diego Unified School District yesterday — three weeks after he was publicly named the top choice for the job. Grier's last day will be Sept. 18, 18 months into his four-year contract. His tenure has been marked by budget cuts and tense relations with the labor-backed school board. San Diego Unified must now find its fourth superintendent in as many years. The school board plans to name an interim superintendent today. (Mentions UCSD) More
