Report: Climate Research Making Progress
Associated Press, Sept. 13 -- Despite some progress, the government's climate change research program is threatened by satellite and other cutbacks, a study says.
A major problem, the National Research Council said Thursday, is the program director's lack of authority to organize spending and research among the 13 different agencies that study the impacts of climate. Preuss Officials on Paid Leave in Grade Probe
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 13 -- The principal of the nationally recognized Preuss School on the UCSD campus has been placed on leave while university auditors investigate allegations of grade irregularities.
Since June, university auditors have been looking into reports that grades were changed and recorded inappropriately at the public charter school. Grades for the past three to four years are being reviewed. More
UC San Diego Developing $125 Million Cancer Treatment Center
North County Times, Sept. 13 -- UC San Diego is working to develop a $125 million proton-and particle-therapy cancer treatment center, university officials announced Wednesday.
Proton and particle therapy, now available at only a few clinics nationwide, enables doctors to better target and destroy cancerous tumors, according to UCSD. Traditional radiation therapy, which is not as precise, sometimes damages or destroys healthy tissue surrounding tumors. More
