A Shorter, Cheaper MBA Model
Financial Times (U.K.)
, Sept. 13 – Where Insead leads, others follow. These days, one-year MBA programs are growing in prominence and quality across Europe and Asia. In 2004, there were just six one-year programs ranked in the top 50 of the Financial Times global rankings; in 2009, 15 of the top 50 programs ran for 12 months or less; Insead still runs the shortest program at 10½ months. Over the same period, the number of two-year programs in the top 50 dropped from two-thirds (33) to less than half (23). (Quotes Robert Sullivan, dean of UCSD’s Rady School of ManagementMore

Stop Feeling Bad About Feeling Good
Health.com
, Sept. 13 – It was one of the best—most awesome—weeks of my career: Within 36 hours of my latest novel hitting the best-seller list, I signed with a publisher for my novel-in-progress plus a second book. I was beyond ecstatic that all my hard work had paid off. My husband was the first to know. Then I called my parents. After Mom and Dad, I … well … I wasn’t sure who to tell next. I just couldn’t bring myself to pop the proverbial cork on the news. Instead, I let my husband and my parents do the telling for me. (Mentions UCSD) More

Showalter's March to Mexico Took Detour
San Diego Union-Tribune
, Sept. 15 -- Let's call it Showalter's March through San Diego County. San Diego County's part in the War Between the States is largely ignored, but there was a bit of Civil War action that culminated about three miles south of Lake Henshaw. The affair of Daniel Showalter and his band of 16 or 17 alleged secessionists actually began in spring 1861, when the state Legislature considered a resolution to support President Lincoln and the Union. Obama Campaigns for Specter in Pa.
Sun News
, Sept. 15 -- President Barack Obama urged Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday to support the re-election bid of Sen. Arlen Specter in a personal appearance here for the Republican-turned-Democrat who represents an important test of the White House's political apparatus.
Facing a primary challenge, Specter, a longtime Republican, switched political parties in April, giving Democrats a valuable 60-vote majority in the Senate. The White House immediately said it would help Specter defend his seat, starting with a fundraiser Tuesday that was expected to raise $2.5 million. Convention Center Seeking "Specialist” to Ballyhoo Expansion
San Diego Reader
, Sept. 15 -- The San Diego Convention Center Corp. is seeking a full-time "community outreach specialist" who would, among other things, "develop community outreach and education programs for expansion project phases." Translation: propagandize for the convention center expansion. The job opening, which pays $42,115 annually and includes "competitive benefits," was originally posted August 20 on the job board of the San Diego branch of the Public Relations Society of America. I could not reach Steve Johnson, convention center spokesperson, to learn if the job has been filled. (Quotes UCSD political science professor Steve ErieMore

Carving Out Time for Family Dinner is Worth it
Inside Bay Area
, Sept. 16 -- The dinner table is my family's sanctuary, with a barrier that no phone signal can penetrate. That is, unless I want to feel the wrath of my parents' eyes glowering down on me as I reach into my pocket at the sound of my ringtone. Before Facebook, Twitter and the iPhone, people talked to each other in the same room. We took pleasure in sitting down at the dinner table, having a good meal and entertaining one another with the comings and goings of our respective lives.
