$30 Million for the Future
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 17 -- Stem cell supporters gathered at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research to celebrate a $30 million donation from a South Dakota philanthropist that, combined with a $43 million grant from the state stem cell institute, will help pay for a dedicated stem cell research center to be built on North Torrey Pines Road. “What a great day this is,” said Lawrence Goldstein, a stem cell researcher at UCSD. The university is one of the members of the San Diego stem cells consortium, the group that will build the center. More

Global Warming Effects Here Now Too Late to Reverse Some Damage
KPBS, Sept. 16 -- UCSD scientists say it's too late to stop the effects of global warming. Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers say irreversible warming will melt glaciers and cause the extinction of plants and animals. Climate Scientist V. Ramanathan says the earth will warm about 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels. More
Managing Director Of La Jolla Playhouse Steps Down
Broadway World, Sept. 16 -- La Jolla Playhouse Board Chair Ralph Bryan announced today that Steven Libman, Managing Director, is stepping down to pursue an expanding consulting practice. Mr. Libman teaches in the Graduate Theatre Program for UCSD and serves on the national advisory board for the Graduate Arts Management Program at Carnegie Mellon University. More
