Female-dropout
study focuses on engineering
San Diego Union Tribune, Aug. 2 Female students
are more likely to drop out of engineering studies than their
male counterparts because they perceive math and science skills
as innate and not learned abilities, according to a UCSD study
co-authored by assistant professor of bioengineering Sangeeta
Bhatia. Bhatia and assistant professor of psychology Gail
D. Heyman will publish their study this week in the Journal
of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering.

Senate
gives final Congressional approval to trade bill
Copley News Service, Aug. 1 The U.S Senate
gave final congressional approval on Thursday to legislation freeing
President Bushs hand to negotiate international trade deals.
UCSD professor of International Relations/Pacific Studies
and director of APEC Richard Feinberg commented that the
vote makes possible the negotiation of a hemisphere-wide Free
Trade Area of the Americas.
