AIDS seen tripling from 95 to 2000
Boston Globe, Aug. 8 Scientists discovered
that up to 20 percent of people newly infected with HIV may have
a drug-resistant strain of the virus. UCSD researcher Douglas
Richman is an author of the study that appeared in the New
England Journal of Medicine.

UCSD clears
scientist of any wrongdoing
Associated Press, Aug. 9 Jiangyu Zhu,
a UCSD scientist accused of stealing trade secrets in 1999
when he worked at Harvard Medical School, has been cleared of
any wrongdoing during his employment at UCSD. UCSD
officials said a month-long internal review of Zhus
work did not reveal any evidence that Dr. Zhu was
engaging in any activity that compromises the integrity of UCSDs
research program.

T Sector, Aug. 8 UCSD Jacobs School
of Engineering professor Peter Asbeck becomes only the
third California researcher to win the IEEE David Sarnoff Award
since it was instituted almost 50 years ago.

Construction
booms as schools upgrade facilities
San Diego Business Journal, Aug. 5-11 UCSD
is one of the San Diego County universities undergoing construction
to keep up with enrollment growth and research needs. UCSD
expects to grow to 27,600 students over the next 10 years. Atkins
Hanscomb provided cost management and other consulting services
for UCSD projects such as a $110 million mixed-use housing
and classroom project and a $17.8 million biomedical library.

facility designated
Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aug. 9 Moss Landing laboratory
officials and U.S. Rep. Sam Farr announced the designation of
