Wildfire
smoke carries health risks
San Diego Union Tribune, Aug. 19 The makeup
of wildfire smoke and how it degrades air quality and human health
have been studied worldwide. V. Ramanathan, professor of
climate and atmospheric science at Scripps Institution of Oceanography,
contributed to a U.N. study that reported 500,000 premature deaths
a year in India may be caused by severe pollution compounded by
biomass burning. Ramanathan has estimated that biomass burning
accounts for at least 25 percent of persistent air pollution in
South Asia, which has resulted in a two-mile-thick blanket of
haze over the region called the Asian Brown Cloud.
