Vitamins help heart patient arteries
Associated Press, Aug. 28 – A study led by UCSD senior research associate Guido Schnyder found that a six-month regimen of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 can help prevent recurrence of blocked arteries in patients who have undergone coronary angioplasty. The findings were published in Wednesday’s issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Gene separates early humans from apes
Yahoo news, Aug. 27 – Ajit Varki, professor of medicine and director of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center at UCSD, co-authored a study that used DNA microarray technology to show pronounce differences in gene expression levels between humans and chimpanzees.

Surgeons debate efficacy of arthritic knee surgery
San Diego Daily Transcript, Aug. 27 – A panel of surgeons at the International Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology conference here in San Diego challenged the accuracy and validity of a study that calls a popular treatment for arthritic knee pain a “sham.” James Tasto, a professor at UCSD, was a member of a panel speaking against the study.

San Diego Union Tribune, Oceans Watch, Aug. 28 – This edition of Oceans Watch explores oceanic weather systems, which appear to parallel atmospheric systems. Mentions a Scripps Institution of Oceanography study by Tim Barnett and David Pierce that used ocean modeling and global ocean temperature measurements to determine that ocean warming has been caused by human activities.
