Campaign 2006: Governor’s Race
San Francisco Chronicle, August 18 -- Newport Beach (Orange County) Councilman Richard Nichols won't be among those cheering when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger takes the stage this weekend at the state Republican Convention in Los Angeles. Like a lot of conservative voters, the 66-year-old Nichols said he's disillusioned with the governor's recent efforts to recast himself as a political moderate in order to curry favor among Democrats and independent voters. Immigration Reform: an Ignominious End
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion, August 18 -- The once-promising national debate over immigration reform, begun two-and-a-half years ago when President Bush proposed a new guest-worker program to “match willing workers with willing employers,” has come to a tawdry, ignominious end. No comprehensive immigration legislation will be enacted this year because President Bush allowed the debate to be hijacked by the hard-core, anti-immigration Republicans in the House, whose goal is to block any such legislation. Blending Brains, Brine
San Diego Union-Tribune, August 18 -- Local scientists and drug industry executives will gather on a La Jolla beach this weekend for a charity event renowned both for its cause – raising money for cancer research – and its unlikely couture. The Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational, now in its 13th year, is one of the premier benefits in San Diego. More
Miramar Plan Opposition Cheered
San Diego Union-Tribune, August 18 -- The crowd erupted into applause and cheers last night when state Assemblyman George Plescia reaffirmed his opposition to locating a civilian airport at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. The standing-room-only crowd of about 500 in an auditorium at Scripps High School erupted again when Marine officers said they need the base for training and to be prepared for national defense and emergencies. Dance Takes Back Seat
to Music at 'SummerFest'
San Diego Union-Tribune, August 18 -- Although an exciting evening of performances, Wednesday's “Dancing at SummerFest” was a puzzle. Unlike in a similarly titled program last year, the La Jolla Music Society didn't bring dance and music as full partners to the Sherwood Auditorium stage. Coffee: The New Pot of Gold?
The Register-Mail, August 18 -- If you think bitter-tasting wheatgrass juice or pungent herbal tea concoctions are your only healthy beverage choices, it's time to wake up and taste the coffee. A good ol' cup of joe or two may be just what the doctor ordered. "Not only is coffee not bad for our health, as once believed, coffee may actually have a healthy protective effect," says Cheryl Rock, researcher and professor of nutrition at UCSD's School of Medicine.
