Brain Helps Sleep Deprived, to a Point

, Aug. 8 -- A U.S. study found sleep deprivation significantly impairs attention, working memory performance and the ability to drive. Dr. Sean Drummond of UCSD and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System recruited 40 volunteers with good sleep habits who lived two normal days and nights, stayed awake for 64 hours and then were allowed again to sleep so the team could observe the recovery process. Film Sees End Near for Libraries

, Aug. 8 -- Imagine a movie that actually depends on cell-phone interruptions and loud, incessant chatter. For many, that will sound like a reel nightmare, the cineplex equivalent of the Tower of Babel. At ZeroOne, San Jose's inaugural high-tech arts festival, such a confluence of media represents the future. ``Specflic 2.0'' -- a speculative discourse on the future of libraries -- utilizes multiple projection systems, live sound mixing, radio and Internet feeds, and a cast of five. Aug. 8  –  The Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center today announced that Dr. Georgia Robins Sadler, the associate director for community outreach and clinical professor of surgery at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, will receive the 2006 Rell Sunn “Queen of Makaha” Award in recognition of her commitment to the battle against cancer and serving the community.
