Network of Lakes Discovered Beneath Antarctic Ice Sheet
USA Today, Feb. 15 -- Beneath the snow, ice and bitter cold of Antarctica, scientists have discovered a network of lakes that fill and empty with rapidly flowing water. It's a finding that may improve understanding of the interaction between global warming and the melting of Antarctic ice, which could contribute to a worldwide rise in ocean level. Lead author Helen Fricker of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography said the researchers were surprised by how fast things were moving. More

Clifford Shults, 56; Neurologist Studied Parkinson's Effects
San Diego Union-Tribune, Feb. 15 -- A professor of neurosciences at the UCSD School of Medicine and neurologist at the VA Medical Center, Dr. Clifford Shults was well-known for his work with Parkinson's disease. Dr. Shults, a resident of La Jolla, died Feb. 7 of complications from cancer. He was 56. More
Paralyzed Surfer Makes Large Donation to UCSD Program
10News, Feb. 15 -- UCSD received a $17,000 donation from a paralyzed local surfer to help fund spinal cord regeneration research, university officials announced Thursday. Tony Mezzadri's gift will go to UCSD's Center for Neural Repair and the Translational Spinal Cord Regeneration Research Program. More
