UC Researchers Develop Probe in Search for Life on Mars
The Daily Californian, Jan. 19 -- If aliens did exist, scientists think they’d most likely take up residence on Mars. “Mars is more or less our little sister,” said UC San Diego professor Jeffrey Bada. “We now know there was water in the early history of the planet, and water is one of the important ingredients you need for life ... UCSD Names Medical School Dean
San Diego Union-Tribune, Jan. 19 -- Dr. David Brenner will become vice chancellor and dean for the School of Medicine at UCSD, the university announced yesterday. Brenner is chairman for the Department of Medicine at Columbia University in New York. A gastroenterologist, he specializes in diseases of the liver and their genetic links. More

Two Share Wolf Prize
Chemical and Engineering News, Jan. 15 -- The Israel-based Wolf Foundation has awarded its 2007 Prize in Chemistry to an Israeli structural biologist for work on the ribosome and to a physicist in California for research on photosynthesis. The awardees, professors Ada Yonath of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, and George Feher of the University of California, San Diego, will share the $100,000 prize. More
