Each Stored Embryo Is a Stem Cell Debate
USA Today
, Jan. 30 -- As Congress renews debate about funding stem cell research using human embryos, people are thinking hard about what to do with excess embryos after their families are complete. Only they — not politicians, doctors or ethicists — are legally entitled to make the call. (Quotes Mary Devereaux, a bioethicist at UCSD) More

Statins: the Truth
Daily Mail, UK, Jan. 30 -- Those who are taking statins to lower their cholesterol may well be confused about whether it is worth it and how safe they are. Last week an article in the medical journal The Lancet claimed the drugs don't benefit women or elderly men if they don't have a cardiovascular problem, while for younger men, taking statins only slightly reduces the risk of heart attack if they'd never had an attack. Power Sharing
San Diego Union-Tribune

In truth, many of the nation's roughly 12 million illegal immigrants obtain free or low-cost medical services – emergency as well as outpatient – through a much broader patchwork of clinics, hospitals and doctors. (Quotes Dr. Ellen Beck, director of a free clinic at UCSD) More

'Triple Feature' Hits Two Home Runs, One Single
San Diego Union-Tribune
, Jan. 29 – It's a rare joy when dance offers such freshness and depth as does “California Triple Feature,” presented by Sushi and UCSD at UCSD's Wagner Dance Building last weekend. More

Lab on a Chip Will Look for Life On Mars
Electronic Design
, Jan. 30 -- The European ExoMars rover mission will soar to the Red Planet in 2013 to search for signs of life. While the Viking landers failed to find organic molecules when they explored Mars during the 1970s, their sensitivity was so low, they wouldn’t have found life even if there were a million bacteria per gram of soil. Jointly developed by UCSD and UC Berkeley, the Urey Mars Organic and Oxidant Detector offers hope with part-per-trillion sensitivity. More
