Scientists detail how the brain regulates sensory information
Exploration, June 13 – UCSD physics professor David Kleinfeld is one of the leaders of a research collaboration between UCSD and Vanderbilt University that has revealed how the brains of higher animals and probably humans integrate sensory information and motor control signals in a way that allows us to heighten our senses to smell a faint odor, visualize an individual in a crowd, or even discern the sounds of a single instrument in an orchestra.  (Mentions UCSD physics lab assistant Lynne M. Rethinking foreign students: A question of the national interest

June 17 – With the number of student visas issued in the U.S. on the rise, many people are questioning whether it is in our nation’s best interest to allow these unmonitored immigrants such easy entrance.  A foreigner qualifies for a student visa by being accepted to and being enrolled in an INS-approved institution.  UCSD is one of 400 INS-approved institutions in the San Diego area.
