Allyson Green Dance Negotiates
Border Crossings Large and Small
The New York Times, June 6 --Huge projections of a desert landscape, punctuated by surreal glowing tubes of light, form the backdrop to "Abandon," a muted duo for women that opened UCSD’s Allyson Green Dance's "Migrations," presented by Danspace Project on Friday night. The sweeping landscapes, from a video of a light installation by Peter Terezakis, are an apt analogy for Ms. Green's work, which is both spacious in structure and as self-possessed as any mountain range. In California, Democrats Try
First Step to Win Back House
The New York Times, June 3 -- In the first major Congressional race of what could be a politically volatile year, the contest to fill the seat of a jailed Republican is testing whether Democrats can capitalize on Republican unrest in the battle for the House. (Quotes Gary Jacobson, a political scientist at UCSD) More
Be There and Be Square
Wired Magazine, June 6 -- It’s a cool afternoon in the stylish Beachwood Canyon section of Los Angeles. The Hollywood sign glows in the distance. Fancy cars and oh-so-casually fancy people meander through the winding lanes. It could be a scene from Entourage, except you’re not headed to some starlet-studded soiree. No, you’re on your way to something far more exotic: Math-Club. (Mention’s UCSD professor Ron Graham, a former chief scientist at AT&T Labs who also happens to be one of the most famous living mathematicians) More
Dr. J. Edwin Seegmiller, 85;
Authority on Aging and Gout
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 6 -- Dr. J. Edwin Seegmiller's scholarly pursuit of new solutions to old problems led him on a path of discovery that illuminated diseases ranging from those of childhood to old age. By 1983, when he founded what today is UCSD’s Stein Institute of Research on Aging, Dr. Seegmiller was one of the country's leading metabolic researchers and an authority on a form of arthritis known as gout. Dr. Seegmiller, who stepped down as the institute's director in 1990 after reaching mandatory retirement age, died May 31 at UCSD's Thornton Hospital. He was 85. More
Growing the Seaweed Revolution
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 6 – Most of us – well, some of us – already know the trouble we're in; that the human race may soon be up to its neck in dead ocean water, which is going to play havoc with the pizza and antique industries in Ocean Beach. One scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla predicts that, within less than a century, there will be no more large sharks in the world's oceans – unless commercial fishing patterns change. Patients Can Order Off Menu Any Time of Day
10News, June 5 – Would you believe hospitals are becoming more like hotels these days? It's hard to imagine, but at some hospitals the hotel atmosphere begins as soon as you enter the building. There's classical music, beautiful furnishings and surroundings and room service. But it isn't a hotel; it's the intermediate care wing at UCSD’s Thornton Hospital in La Jolla. More
Festival Displays by Turns Intense and Lank
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 6 – The Blurred Borders International Dance Festival smudged geopolitical divisions by featuring groups from Ireland, Mexico and the U.S. at City College's Saville Theatre last weekend. (Mentions Liam Clancy, who who joined UCSD's dance faculty last fall) More
