for a Big Quake Near L.A.
CNET, June 20 -- When will California experience its next big quake along the San Andreas Fault? It's hard to say, but conditions are ripe for a big one near Los Angeles and San Diego. The southern section of the fault, which crosses through Palm Springs and San Bernardino, has not experienced a major earthquake in at least 300 years, according to Yuri Fialko of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. A Better Toxicity Test for Drugs
MIT Technology Review, June 19 -- A new method of sensing slight changes in the structure of liver cells, based on the way they scatter light, could provide a faster, more efficient way to test the toxicity of drugs and the harmful effects of environmental pollutants. The new device was developed by Michael Sailor, professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at UCSD, and Sangeeta Bhatia, associate professor in the department of health sciences and technology and the department of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. Vitamin D's Ray of Hope
Newsday, June 19 -- A team of Norwegian researchers has produced provocative clues about bone density, vitamin D and breast cancer. At the recent annual convention of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the largest meeting in the world of cancer specialists, Dr. Per Lonning of Haukland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway, said that low vitamin D levels could be a risk factor for the malignancy. San Diego Union-Tribune, June 21 – Nora King was 11 when she decided to carry on her family's tradition of giving by forming a theater troupe and turning over the performance proceeds to children's charities. The budding philanthropist enlisted a friend, hired a director and raised $500 from the performance of “A Holiday Story” for San Pasqual Academy, a resident high school for foster teens.
