Beach pollution source eludes scientists despite careful study
Los Angeles Times,
May 16 – A study conducted by researchers from USC, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School found no substantial evidence that an offshore sewage plume caused the Huntington Beach pollution that led to the summer-long closure of its coastline in 1999.

UC nurses announce one-day strike set for May 29
Associated Press,
May 16 – University of California nurses will hold a one-day strike May 29 to protest what they called “bad faith bargaining” during their contract negotiations, union officials announced Wednesday night. (Quotes UCSD Medical Center nurse and a negotiator for the nurses union Geri Jenkins).
