Dwarf galaxy swarms boost dark matter theory

May 22 – A study led by UCSD astrophysicist Neal Dalal discovered evidence that hordes of dark, miniature galaxies surround ordinary galaxies, lending credence to the theory that the universe is comprised mostly of cold, dark matter.

Artist known for large, colorful sculptures

Obituaries, May 23 – Niki de Saint Phalle, who created a fantastic world of monumental female figures fondly known as “Nanas” and crafted vividly colorful sculptures that became popular landmarks, has died.  Saint Phalle created  “Sun God”, the inaugural work in UCSD’s prestigious Stuart Collection.  (Quotes UCSD director of the Stuart Collection Mary Beebe).

Navy research sub catches fire in Pacific
San Diego Union Tribune, May 22 – A Navy research submarine caught fire and partially flooded while surfaced off the Pacific Coast.  It had been slated to take part in a sonar experiment next week with Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists.
