Laser ‘radar’ tracks quakes, climate
United Press International, May 29 – Scripps Institution of Oceanography geophysics professor Jean-Bernard Minster is among the researchers using a ranging and location system based on light instead of radio waves to monitor changes in geologic faults and ice sheets.

Gene doping threatens to transform sport
Financial Times (London), May 31 – Gene therapy, the transfer of different genes into the bodies of patients, could be used to improve athletic performance substantially.  Experts fear that athletes may misuse these new therapies since many scientists believe it could be near impossible to detect gene therapy in athletes.
