might stop paralysis in rats
UPI, Nov. 5 – Scientists have
achieved success in manipulating primitive cells to become nervous
system cells, which, in some cases, restored leg function to
laboratory animals with spinal cord injuries. (Quotes Dr. Mark

FDA issues
warning about bone cement
UPI, Nov. 5 – The Food and Drug
Administration has issued a warning about a type of bone cement
used to treat fractures in the spine that has been linked to
numerous side effects, but orthopedic surgeons suggest the alert
might be over-reaching. (The FDA cited research by Dr. Steven
Garfin, chairman of orthopedic surgery at UCSD,
Dr. Garfin is quoted).

Yaacov Bentor,
92: research geologist discovered Bentorite
San Diego Union Tribune, Nov. 6 –
For more than half a century, Yaacov Bentor immersed himself
in the study of geology, rocks and minerals – including
one mineral that bears his name, Bentorite. Bentor died last
week at his La Jolla home of natural causes. He was 92. (Dr.
Bentor was a research geologist emeritus at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography).

pharmaceutical company founded in 1995 by venture capitalist
Scott Glenn. The company, which had sales of $50 million in
2001, topped the Deloitte & Touche 2002 Technology Fast
50 list for San Diego and Orange counties. The company was also
ranked third on Inc. Magazine’s fasting-growing privately
held companies in America. Its CEO is James Schoeneck. (Quotes
