Scott’s penguins at risk
BBC news, Nov. 11 – Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists Gerald Kooyman and Paul Ponganis say the descendants of Emperor penguins are facing grave danger. The two scientists who visited the Antarctic site last month say the birds are struggling to cope with the effects of two giant icebergs.

“Patriot” watch
In These Times, Nov. 11, Pg. 5 – Administrators at UCSD took interpretation of the USA Patriot Act into their own hands in mid-September. The university ordered a student group, the Che Café Collective, to remove links on the group’s Web site to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, saying the link violated the section of the act that prohibits providing “material support” to groups on the State Department’s foreign terrorist list. UCSD retracted the request when the Free Expression Network sent a letter denouncing the action.

UCSD will host the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships. ...UCSD's women's cross country team qualified for nationals after a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II West Regional in Fresno.
