University of California President and former UCSD
chancellor Richard C. Atkinson announced Wednesday he will be
retiring next October after serving for eight years. Regents
chairman John J. Moores will appoint a search committee soon
to start looking for candidates.

model to link genetic mutations to exact disease variations.
The Jacobs School of Engineering team reviewed genetic information
from patients with an enzyme deficiency that causes hemolytic
anemia, finding 150 DNA sequence variations.

study led by John Largier aims to help understand
where pollution in a given part of Mission Bay might have originated.
Researchers are leaving trails of the nontoxic bright red or
green dye in the water, and will track the shape and movement
of dye patches and the concentration in the water.

research gives tiny phytoplankton a large role in Earth’s
climate system

new study conducted by Scripps Institution of Oceanography
researchers, our understanding of the significance of phytoplankton
has been taken to a new level. Robert Frouin
and Sam Iacobellis have argued in a paper published
in the Journal of Geophysical Research that phytoplankton exert
a significant and previously uncalculated influence on Earth’s
climate.
